The second and a half between waves used to be an empty pause with a timer nobody could see. The ship spends it travelling now - the sky stretches into streaks, a drive winds up behind it, and the next wave arrives out of the depth instead of appearing where the last one died. The pause is the length it always was.

The rules themselves were altered: tools/chronicle.sh prints THE LEDGER on every pilot page rather than only on the pages with a row in it, and the bars beside it are half a row on every page rather than full width on some. Nothing about the numbers moves; a clean sheet is shown as one.

The rules themselves were altered: The tagline is the loudest sentence the book owns - the chapter splash, the contents line, the alt text on the plate - and it was the one sentence nobody was writing. tools/tagline.sh always had an answer ready, and a plausible answer sitting in the commit template reads like a decision already made. It is not one: the generator counts lines per directory and draws one of six canned sentences with a checksum, so 57 of the 62 recorded lines were the machine's, only 42 of them were distinct, and one sentence had been the headline of six different chapters.
