what happened

The field stopped ambushing the unarmed. Until your first trap is in the game nobody's events fire at you, and the splash says so - which makes laying one the induction ritual, and the fun ambushes something you sign up for by joining in.

The rules themselves were altered: tools/chronicle.sh writes a roster block into docs/chronicle.js - versions landed per pilot, derived from the same history as the version numbers - so the splash can show a service record without storing any state.
