what happened

David Friedrich noticed that the corner of the splash screen had been saying SOUND ON to a silent room since the day it was fitted, and taught the cabinet to keep the promise rather than the sign. The band comes up on the first thing anybody touches, whatever that is, and comes up on its own where the browser allows it - and until it does, the switch admits it and says PRESS FOR SOUND.

3 sectors on the scan, each drawn as the thing it is; the heavy one is src/audio/context.js.

meanwhile

While v10 was on the cabinet, David Friedrich changed the rules.

The rules themselves were altered: tools/chronicle.sh makes a context at load and asks it, instead of waiting to be told a second time by a reader who already said yes on the previous page - so a chapter reached by clicking a link arrives with the piece still playing. It builds the rig only on a context that can actually run, because every oscillator started on one the browser has parked is a line of it saying so in somebody's console. And the switch gets a third state, lit and waiting, with the meter holding still: tools/docs.sh dresses the same one on the notes pages.
